In the year 1890 Joseph Opinel started producing pocket knives in the French Savoie. The result is a simple, reliable, efficient and extremely successful pocket knife. The Opinel pocket knives are characterized by the wooden handle (mainly beech) and are available with a blade made of carbon steel (not stainless steel) or Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel. The pocket knives have a Virobloc blade lock. This is an effective locking mechanism and locks the blade in both open and closed position.
