The rooster is associated with fire, the sun and rebirth. It is a symbol of dawn and awakening, activity and vigilance. It is believed that when the cock crows at dawn it drives away evil spirits. In ancient Greece, Asclepius (god representing death and rebirth) associated roosters with the sun (red, Apollo, the god of the sun) and black roosters with the underworld (Hades, god of the underworld). Such contrasting values, covering both life and death, have lead to the rooster becoming a symbol of sexual potency.
